6 January 2004

On January 6 2004, the inauguration of the Orthodox Church of Saint Nicolas took place at Havana, Cuba. The ceremony was performed by His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, thus setting the foundations for the first Orthodox church in the country.
The decision was prompted by HM King Constantine's proposal to Fidel Castro in 2000, to renovate the Church of Saint Constantine, which had been dilapidated during the Cuban revolution. This was unfortunately impossible to materialise, as the new plans for the erection of a cultural center had already been launched. However, the Cuban government pledged to construct a new place of worship, an undertaking which materialized with success, four years later.
